PREMIER ON VERDUN
GREATEST BATTLE FOUGHT. FOR LIBERTY. Mr. Llovd George has paid a visit to tho battlefield of Verdun. The battle field' is overgrown fur miles with masses of waving poppies, which, acea from a distance, look like a sea of blood.
A striking memento of the buttle is a spot enclosed with barbed wire, tho scene of a mine explosion where lines of rifles emerging from the shattered earth, mark the lust resting-place of many French soldiers.
Speaking at luncheon at Fort Vaux Mr. Llovd George said: "In (his plnco was fought. probably tlio most terrible battle in the world's history, terrible in its duration, terrible in the numbers enrolled, terrible in the number who wero lost. It is the greatest battle c\er fought tor liberty. In that, battle the banner of liberty was borne by France. Thtvnk God, Frauco won.
"I have always had the most profound admiration for France. Great as ,slio has been in the past, glorious as liave been many of the episodes in her histor\\ tier crowning glory is tlio defence of Verdun. GJorious France, brave France, torn France, bleeding France, devastated Franco, victorious Fiv.nco, I drink to the glory of the men who fc-H for tlio freedom of the world."
