NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES (Prom Our Special Correspondents.) WAIRARAPA It was 'reported at yesterday's meeting of tho Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board that thoro were 20 eases of infectious diseases in tho districts under the control of tho board. These included one case of lethargic ohcephniitis in Pahiatua County, one of meningitis in Eketahuna County, and 'four cases of influenza in Carterton and one in Greytown. Mr. Anderson, of tho Training College, is temporarily filling the position of! first assistant at Masterton District High I School. ' i It was staled by tho secretary at the j meeting of tho Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday that the | hospitals under the control of tho board were getting plentiful supplies of coal. At tho annual meeting of the. ICuox Church congregation held in Masterton on Thursday the following motion, moved by Mr. E. l'eist and seconded by Mr. James M'Gregor, was carried:—"That this congregation of Knox Church, Mast.terlon, is in favour of the proposed union with 'he Methodist and Congregational Churches, provided a satisfactory basis of union can be arrived at." Tho monthly meeting of the Mastcrlon Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday, Mr. 11. Brown presiding. A letter was received from tho postal authorities in reference to a previous resolution of the chamber asking for reversion to the custom of publishing a half-yearly postal guide. The letter stated that at present it was not considered advisable to increase tho frequency of publication. Itwas resolved to brinj? further pressure to bear on the authorities. Tho Stratford Chamber of Commerce forwarded a copy of a resolution passed 'fc(y that council: "That this Chamber of Commerce is of opinion that railway freights and tariff should not bo used for protective purposes, e.g., such as railway protectivo freights in connection with timber and other industries, and that this mattor be brought under the notice of tho Minister of Railways." It was decided to support the resolution. Messrs. Ross, Keith, Perry, and Ilolmwood were appqinted a committeo to go into the question of revised land agents' charges and report. With reference to the recent deputation to the Borough Council regarding the formation of a new road between Queen and Chapel Streets, Mr. D. M. Graham moved that the previously elected committeo be instructed to keep the matter in view. The following new members were elected:—Messrs. ■ King and Henry, tho Cement Pipe Company, and Messrs. Pickering Bros. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday, Mr. E. G. Eton presiding. The following members were present :—Messrs. A. l'isher, T. V. Moore, A. 0. C'onsidine, Arch. Clark. 11. Thompson, J. D. Wilson, H. 0. Toogood, S. Bolton, J. C. Ewington, C. C. Jackson, 'A. L. Speedy, and A. D. M'Leod. A letter was received from Dr. T. H. A. Valiutine, Inspector-Gcneral of Hospitals, suggesting the enlarging of boards' functions as regards the provision of free medical attention in districts under the control of boards, and asking for an opinion on tho matter. On the motion of Mr. J. C. Ewington it was resolved that the letter bo referred to the Central Committee to bring down a report. The secretary of the Masterton Miwiioipal Band wroto_ asking the board to erect a rotunda in the Hospital grounds, in view of the increased numbsr of concerts to be given during tho summer. It was agreed to comply with the request and to call for public subscriptions to provide the necessary funds. It was reported that the motor ambulances loaned by the Defencs Department would in future be stationed at Eketahuna, Mpsterton, ftnld Martinlwroug'h. In connection with tho additions now being carried out 'at tho Masterton Hospital to provide for four extra wards, it was decided to increase the nunibeV to six. A letter was received from the Hamilton Hospital and Charitable Ala Board asking for support for a resolution which had for its object tlie making compulsory of the issue of certificates of "clean" health to couples about to be married. It was decided to ask tho board .concerned to embody its suggestion' in a remit to tho Hospital Boards' Conference. ■
