SOLDIERS ON THE LAND
PROPOSED SCHEME VOR GIVING ASSISTANCE. Bv Teißurnn'i—l'ross Association Christchurch, August 21. Tho question of providing finance to assist: returned soldiers on the land was discussed by a meeting of landowners in the Wairewa County, Little River. The chairman, Mr. .T. 0. Coop, said that at present the Government allowance of JIMOO was very often not quite sufficient for a man to purchase a farm with, and he thought that if various individuals would guarantee sums according to their means it would be a very considerable help townrds putting men on the land. Tho idea was generally approved, and it was decided that Die ratepayers be invited to pay two years' rate; in three instalments for the purpose of providing finance for putting returned soldiers on the land. The revenue from rates last year was -f3OOO, and if the proposal is carried .£6OOO will be available to assist 6oldier-farmers.
