SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS

A return presented to yesterday's meeting of. the Education Board showed., tlhat among the primary schools inspected to date within the district, there wero 155 cases in which a single teacher had to take charge, of a class comprising over 40 pupils. . Mr. London said lie. understood that shortly the education boards of New Zealand would meet to discuss matters,of common interest. The meeting would provide' an excellent opportunity for' exhaustive discussion of under-staffing. He could not sfe how the board could compare the work of one teacher with that of another When one teaaber had so many more children to teach than another. I-Ie wished to see. representations made to the Government with tho object of obtaininz further accommodation in the schools, and more adequate staffing. He moved that the boajd bring , tho matter prominently before the impending conference.
Tho chairman, (Mr. 'i', Forsyth) said that the shortage of teadhers and of ao commodation was the subject of repits to the conference, anil would certainly Be discussed. He did not see that the boni;d would gain anything "by dealing with the question in the meantime.
