A REPORT DENIED

REAPPOINTMENT OF PROFESSOR VON ZEDLITZ COLLEGE COUNCIL INVITING APPLICATIONS The report that a proposal to reappoint Professor von Zedlitz to tho Chair ot Modern Languages at Victoria College had been, betoro the- College Council was mentioned at a meeting of the council last night. Professor T. Hunter moved: "That the council places 011 record its regret that matters discussed in committee of the council last month were given to the Press in such an unfair form, and that The Dominion should have published them without having the report confirmed by the chairman of the council." .

This motion was seconded by the chairman (Mr. Clement Watson) and carried unanimously. Tho Registrar staled that he had received tetters.from three branches of the Returned. Soldiers' Association protecting against tho reported intention of tli9 council to reappoint Professor von Zedlitz. The branches appeared to have communicated with the Minister for Defence, w J ho lutd written to tho council asking to 'be informed what action tho council proposed to take with reference to Professor von fellitz.

Sir Robert Stout: We have not taken any action. You had better reply that the subject mentioned by them had not yet been considered by the council. Professor Hunter: Would it not be tatter to say exactly what has been done? The council has called for applications for the Chair of Modern Languages in New Zealand, Australia, and England, and has done nothing elso. Sir Robert Stout: That is aftl wo have done. Tho Auckland papers had it that 1 had made the proposal to reappoint Professor Von Zedlitz.

Mr'. T. Forsyth: Did The Dominion report that, too? Sir Robert Stout; I don't think so. It appeared in the Auckland papers. I pot several of the papers scat to me, and there was an indignant letter in one of the panftrs pitching into me obout it. The Registrar was instructed to reply to Sir James AJlen thai the council had merely caiUed for applications for the chair.
