PAYMENT 01? COMPASSIONATE ALLOWANCES. The Cilv Council last night decided to press for an amendment to Uie Municipal Corporations Act permitting. the payment of compassionate allowances to retired employees, who arc, not entitled to receivo superannuation. Tho amendment proposed is as follows:—"Section 70 of the Municipal Corporations Act. 1908, is hereby amended by adding thereto' the following new sub-section (C): —(G) (a) Tho council may pay to officers or servants or other employees who have, with tho consent of the council, retired through infirmity arising from old age or illness, such sums by way of retiring allowance, superannuation allowance, or compassionate allowance as the council thinks fit. (b) All such allowances shall he paid out of District Fund, (c) No such allowance shall exceed an amount which, together with, the superannuation allowance i>nyable_ (if any) to tho recipient under tho National Provident Fund Act. 11)03. shall equal the limit of amount of superannuation allowance payable under tho last-mentioned net." The Mayor said the proposed amendment was a step in Ihe riijlit direction, and lie was sure the people of the city would appreciate it.
