FIREMEN AT THEATRES
SOME NEW REGULATIONS.
Tho By-laws oiid l*'ire Brigade Committee reported to tlie council lilst evening:—"That tliej; had received a report from ' thd superintendent of the Fire Brigade with reforonce to • firemen on duty at tho various theatres, and had to recommend that in future the theatres be chawed for the services of tho_ firemen at the rate of ss. per day, holidays anil Sundays included. The Fire Brigade .Department to provido uniforms foS>tho men. and the wages to be increased to 30s. per week, with- double payments for each performance' fair holidays and Sundays; payment of the men to bo made by the council. Tho present rate of pay was 3s. Id. per performance." Tho practice had grown up allowing the theatre management to pay tho firemen direct. That for reasons not necessary to mention was considered unsatisfactory. Now. tho money had to be paid* direct to the council. The uniforms were to be provided for the men out of the extra money. The council charged 5?. a day. and the men—who were former firemen—received 30s. a week.
