WAR IN THE FAR EAST MAY DEVELOP
FROM THE SHANTUNG TREATY. (Rec. August. 19, 5.5 p.m.) Washington, August 18. Mr. Thomas Millard, an American writer, attached to tho Chinese peaco delegation, expressed tho opinion to the Senate Foreign ReUtions Committee, which is hearing evidence in connection with the Shantung Treaty that according to tho unanimous view of American diplomats at Paris the settlement would sooner or later result iu war in tho Far East.
Mr. Millard adds that President Wilson, after an attempt to get Japan to modify her terms regarding Shantung, learned that the Japanese intended, if refused Shantung, to bolt from tho Conference and abandon tho League of Nations. Oilier diplomats believed that Japan was bluffing, but President Wilson did not.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
JAPANESE WARNING TO CHINA. (Rec. August 29, 0.55 a.m.) London, August 19. Reports from Tokio state that- the Japanese Government has warned China that further disturbances in Manchuria similar to the luiangchengha incident will be inimicail to Japanese Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
