STORM ON THE EAST COAST
HEAVY EAIN IN OPOTIKI DISTRICT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Opotiki, August IS. Bain set in >ast Friday morning, and continued almost incessantly till midnight last night. Yesterday the storm increased in violence, rivers rose and overflowed their banks, and all low-lying country was covered. Most of the shopkeepers worked on Sunday lifting their sloelc above the flood-level, but the 6torm abated, and the rain ceased at midnight. The town was not flooded. It is not anticipated that there was any loss of stock, as owners had plenty of warning to remove it to, the nigh areas. The weather now is fine, and the rivers suly elding. . GALE AT WHAKATANE. Whakatane, Augnst 18. Windless Whakatane had a record gala yesterday. The wind blew down several large trees, demolished a school shed, and twisted round the fire brigade station, Telegraphic communication with 1 Opotiki is blocked. Reports state that the rivers are very high in Central Otago, and it Hood in the Taieri is feared if the rain continues. The train from Central Otago has been delayed by slips, and is not expected here till after midnight.
