MARKED INCREASE IN CANTERBURY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, August 18, There is a marked increase in the number of influenza, and pneumonia cases iii Canterbury. The weekly bulletin issued by the Public Health Department for the period ended at noon to-day shows for North Canterbury Health District 2G new cases of influenza and 10 cases of pneumonia, as against 7 cases of each disease last week. The Christchu.rch Influenza Committee is watching carefully the figures in connection with the increase of the disease, STATEMENT BY DISTRICT HEALTH OFFICER. By Telecras!)—Press Association. Christchurch, August 18. A report having reached Christchurch that owing lo the prevalence of influenza it was possible that places of entertainment in the city would bo, closed, a reporter saw Dr. Chesson, District Health Ofliccr, and inquired if the report was accurate. "There is no reason to anticipate anything of that sort at the present time," was Dr. Chesson's reply. "A careful watcli is being maintained," ho added, "of the progress of influenza in this district, and arrangements are in readiness in the event of'anything cropping up, but there is - no justification at the present time for taking any extreme action. It must bo borne in mind that there is a certain amount of influenza and pneumonia existing in and around Christcliurch, and although there is no need for panic it is absolutely essential that people should take every precaution themselves. Especially is it necessary for people to avoid crowds, or congested places of amusement, or of public resort. People must also bo reminded that exposing oneself in a public place when suffering or just recovering from influonza, pneumonia, or any other infectious disease will. render a person liable lo prosecution. It is the intention of the Department of Public Health to take action against any person wilfully exposing others to risk in this manner."
