CORPORATION EMPLOYEES
PAYMENT OF COMPASSIONATE • ALLOWANCES.
The City Council last night decided to press for an amendment to tho Municipal Corporations Act permitting the payinonl'of compassionate allowances (o retired employees, who are not entiued to receive superannuation. Tho aniendment proposed is as follows:—"Section 70 of tho, Municipal Corporations Act, 1908, is hereby amended by adding theroto the following new sub-section (6):—(6) (a) The council may pay to officers or servants or other employees who have, with tho consent of the council, retired through infirmity arising from old age or' illness, such sums by way of retiring allowance, superannuation allowance, or compassionate allowance as tho council thinks fit. ()>) All such allowances shall be paid 1 out of District Fund, (c) No such allowance shall exceed an amount which, together with the superannuation allowance payable (if any) to tho recipient under the National Provident Fund Act, 1908, shall equ:„! the limit of amount of superannuation allowance pavable under the last-mentioned act."
The Mayor said the proposed amendment was a step in the right, direction, and he was suro the peoplo ef the city would appreciate it.
