The newly-formed Australian Club spent a very pleasant, evening on Thursday in the for.iti of a hard-up party at Mr. and Mrs. Lockwood's residence, /"Waudoo," Melrose Street. Island Bay. The rooms were prettily decorated with bowls of various kinds of gum loaves, yellow spring flowers, and purple irises. About fifty members arrived in odd gannents and patches, amongst whom wero a very realistic Ned ICelly and a "lute." The different.'"hard-up" costumed caused very much merriment, and prizes were awarded, by ballot, to idrs. Gardener, who was in sacking,' with rope and gum leaves for'decoration, and Mr. Locluvood, in dress coat, khaki drill trousers, and green neckerchief. Tho talent of tho club is of a high outer, and Miss. Wright and Mr. AHvilie, Mr. and Mrs. Dillon, Mr. Hale, Mr. Brooks, were responsible for the musical and elocutionary items. Dancing aJX; games took place, until midnight. A special oar took the members to their various destinations. Mr. H. E- Holland, M.P.. will deliver a. lecture.at Alexandra Hall to-morrow evening, the subject of his address being "Foundation ■ Principles of Socialism." A pair of wrens raised their brood in a disused gas stove, lying in a garden at Bampton, Devon.
