GRAND NATIONAL MEETING
« STEEPLECHASE WON BY LOCHELLA
TIMp A RECORD FOR THE RACE
GAZIQUE WINS WINTER CUP
By Telegraph-Special Correspondent. Christchurch, August 12. The weather at Biccartou was beautifully fine, and the crowd seemed quite up to xhe standard of previous years. The totalisator investments were .£55, 832, compared with Mo,m on the first day of the two day's meeting last year. The big Steeplechase was aoiie-horserace for Lochella, and the favourite, Master Strowan, and Master Lupin were both a bit unlucky in having to cover extra ground, but the result was not affected. The Winter Cup was a clean-run race, the only horse to meet trouble being Form Up, who got on the heels of another horse and nearly fell when two furlongs from home. The Tally-Ho Plate was as usual an unsatisfactory affair. There were only four runners, and Sandown was a good favourite, but after- covering more ground than anything else in tho race he was | comfortably beaten by The Grand. Theso were the only ones to finish. Toofan j broke down, and Sis Cylinder fell. There | was much comment as to the horsemanship. " '| The Trial Hurdles was a splendid betting race, and tho good contest foreshadowed by the machine was realised. Wild Pilgrim lost his rider at the first fence, and Signature and Sir Medallist led Eeformation and a bunched field. Down the back Eeformation took chargo from the leaders, and then came Tip Up and Master Moutoa, with 'Paraoa and Tigcrlaud nest. Eeformation was done j with entering tho straight, where Master Moutoa ran up to Signature, and. the 1 pair and Tip Up jumped the last fence together clear of Paraoa. A great race to the post saw Master Moutoa win by two lengths from .the fast-finishing Paraoa, who beat Signature by a. neck. Reformation, Sir Medallist, and Tip Up were next. The finishing effort of Paraoa has brought him into prominence for tho National Hurdles, in which he. will have 151b. less to carry. Munster was withdrawn from the Jumpers' Plat Handicap, and Cynic, who went down freely enough and was well warmed up before the start, was made a good favourite Gang Awa' and' Jeanno; I set a fast pace, with the favourite in the rear. Hard ridden, he ran into third place at the sis furlongs. He joined the leaders a furlong from home. Prom this point he outstayed them, and won comfortably from Art and Sir Solo. The other pair were ..beaten off. At the finish the winner pulled up quite sound, and doubtless' will be allowed to ta&o his place in the National Hurdles field. . Coalition and Manawapango were missing when the field paraded "for the National Steeplechase. There was a rush for positions to view the starters. Polt-lio-jue was first in, and 'his condition was generally condemned, but Waimai, Bon Eeve, Master Lupin, Master Strowan, and Lochella, came in for favourable comment, especially the latter. The field went off to a good 6tart. At the first attempt Morecambe led a bunched field over the brush, but Lochella then joined him, and the pair gave a. great exhibition of "lepping" for a circuit, while no fault could be found with the jumping of the others, except'Polthogue, wlio fell at The Kennels double the first time, Waimai and Bon Eeve both gave splendid displays. The top-weight gained ground each fence. With the last circuit entered upon, Lochella was clear, and Waimai, Vascular, Master- Lupin, and Bon Eeve were in a bunch. The leader kept going, and'not once did he put a foot wrong. Once over The Kennels double, the leader put a break on tho field. Master Lupin was the only one of the others that could respond to liocliplla's run. Waimai fell at tho second fence from home, and the other pair were left to fight it out. Lochella jumped the last fence safely, and ran in an easy winner by eight lengths from Master Lupin. Ten lengths away came Master Strowan and Bon Eeve. The others finished at long intervals. Bon Eeve was very lame on returning to the birdcage. The winner was favourite. This win was very well received. The time was a record for the race. ' .
The Hunters' Hurdles was voted a good thing for Sonny, and w'hen looking like a winner he struck the second last feuce and got rid of his rider. Eed Cent led the whole way and won easily from Gay Light and JohiuEeilly, with the others beaten off.
There were onlv four runnel's in the Enfield Steeplechase, and Manawapango was a better favourite than San Sebastian, while the other pair were neglected. The top weight'took charge at the first fence, and led throughout. Ha jumped well all the way, and the stake was never in dan«er. San Sebastian was'inclined to shirk his fences, but he jumped safely and finished second. Traditor was a poor third.
The AVinter Cup was next, and the big field all "paraded with -the exception of Imaribbon. Robekah aiid Gamecock was the order of the favourites, and there was a very big nool on the race, over ,£12,000 beiir? rung up. At the start Leapins Burn, Gold Kip, and Kilkeo were left, and- Eebekah and Cerberus led a packed field;' with the two top-weights, Form Up, Kilboyne, and Hiero handy. Entering the straight, the leaders were in front by two lengths, but the others were closing up, and All Over. and Gold Kip on the outside were prominent. At tho distance Gaziquo and .Gold Kip shot out, and in a good finish Gold Kjp appeared to win by a head, but the judge lodged Gazique on top. Eebekah was right up, and then came Cerberus and Hiero. The winner put un a great performance, but the honours of the race were to Gold Kip, who "was giving the leaders twenty lenaths start after going two furlongs.
The Avonhead Handicap saw Tararoa and Brackenfield well backed in a big field. The public were well on the spot, for the horses named were always in the lead, and Brackenfielcl led the .whole, way, winning easily from Tararoa. Black Mountain finished just clear of Imaribbon, who was running third most of the way. DETAILED RESULTS, Hv Teler»ranh—Pi-prs Aeiociatlon. TALLY-HO PLATE, of 100 sovs. Special weights.
