GENERAL GOUEATO'S PRAISE. London, July 17. A telegram from Paris reports Ih/it in an interriew General Gourau.d said:— "I adore my poilus: but I say 'hats off' to tho British 29th Division and General Birdwood's Anzacs on the 19th. "They are the most magnificent soldiers "any war has produced." General Gouraud, whose generalship in the Champagne contributed materially to the German sebback last year, is an immensely popular figure in the French Army. Ho has always had a great opinion of the Engli?h and Dominion troops as fighters, and he regards their love for sport as <m excellent preparation for battle. He is proucLftf. having commanded the British troops in the Dardanelles, where he was wounded by a Turkish naval shell.while inspecting an hospital. Gangrene followed resulting in tho loss of an arm. He is known throughout the army as tho "Lion of Argonne," a title earned by his brilliant work in command of a division on the Argonne front.. •
