THE COAL CONFERENCE
A CRITICAL STAGE. _ The conference of coal miners and mix. ins companies seems to be nenrinst an end, but there is no evidence yet as t« what that eaid will he. On Saturday tho coal owners made an offer of inorcased wages to the miners and other ruino worker?, and the representatives of tho Miners' Federation withheld their reply to that oiler until to-day. As tho proceedings are still in committee, it is not known exactly what that reply was, but it certainty did not amount to a straight-out acceptance of tho employers' nffer. Tho miners' representatives made a statement in reply, and the position at the moment is that tihe mine owners nra considering this reply. The probabilities seem to be that the confercnco will end very soon.
