The Hon. J. A. Hanan has returned from the South Island.

A Press Association cablegram from Melbourne records the death of Sir Henry Hodges, Senior Puisne Judge of tho Supremo Court, who was appointed a Judge of tho Supremo Court of Victoria in ISS9. He was born at Liverpool, England, in 1811.

Chief Judge Jackson Palmer, of the Native Land Court, is a sufferer froin lethargic encephalitis. His condition is causing his friends grave anxiety.

At yesterday's meeting of the executive of the Central Chamber of Commerce Mr. I/. A. Edwards was granted nine months' leave of absence- to visit America and Europe, and will be provided with credentials by the chamber.

Cabled atlvico has been received that Sergeant Grant, of Lower Hutt, and formerly of fho staff of the Bank of New Soußi Wales in Wellington, is returning by the Giessen this month. Sergeant Grant enlisted at the outbreak of war and proceeded to Samoa with tlm first draft. On his return to New Zealand 'from Samoa Sergeant Grant secured his discharge, but soon after ho enlisted again, and after being engaged in staff work for some time lie left for' the front with a late draft,. Sergeant Grant is a son-in-law of Mr. Bean, postmaster, Lower Ilutt.

At Mount Cook Police Station Constable Joseph, Quinn was last evening presented with a-gold-mounted fountain pen as V, mark of the esteem in which his comrades have held him during his six years of service at tho station named. Constable Quinn has been transferred to the Greymouth district. In making the presentation, Senior-Sergeant Kelly spoke very highly indeed of the departing constable, and said ho was very sorry to.. lose such an able and experienced officer. Constablo Quinn suitably responded. On Saturday evening a, welcome home social was tendered to Mr. J. B. Clarkson 011 his return from America and Europe by the staff of the firm of Messrs. Ilope Gibbons, Sons, and J. 11. Clnrkson, Ltd.
