MAGISTRATE'S COURT

KO WORK FOR TWO MONTHS,

The proceedings at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday wero presided over by Mr. E. Page, S.M. A coloured man named James Diffss defended a chargo of being an incorrigible rogue. Polico evidence was given that during tho pnst two months Disss had been seen in tho company of reputed thieves, .and that he was rot known to do any work. Diggs said ho returned from the front about fifteen months ago, tlnd had worked as a coolc on several steamers. It was a fact that ho had not worked for a 'couplo of months, but this was duo to emplovjiient being unobtainable. In reply To Acling-Sub-Inspcctor Emerson, Eiifr-rs said 'ho left the Tiixawora at Auckland about two months ago. Some of the men he was said to have consorted with were returned soldiers, and ho had met them "over there." Defendant was ordered to coma up for sentence when called on within twelvo months. "I expect you to find honest work," remarked His Worship to defendant, for whom Mr. N. Watson appeared. A fine of i£s, in default se>ven clays' detention, 'was imposed on Henry Francis M'DowCll for having committed nn indecent act, and for drunkenness he was convicted and discharged. On a charge of using obscene in a public street. Henry Smale wis fined <£1, and on a further chargo of insobriety tho was fined ss. Thomas Troy, ,who said ho wa9 employed at strenuous work on tho wharf, was fined £i for tho third broaoh of his prohibition order, and was convicted and discharged for drunkenness. For insobriety, Carl Wilhelm Gustafson was fined Joseph Dossenbaek 10s., John Casey ,GI, and John M'Dotiald ]oa. Seven first offenders were also dealt with in tho usual manner. Two of tho latter, who had been arrested on. charges of helpless drunkonnese, were eaoli fined 10s., and ordered to pay lis. Gd. medical expenses. Paul Bolis was ordered to pay --- ss. lior week towards tho support of his wife, Mary Ann Belis, and children. Mr. N. Wa-tson appeared on behalf of the applicant, and Mr. G. W. Afellish for defendant. An order was made requiring Albert Henderson to pay £1 ss. weekly towards the maintenance of his wife, Thyra Henderson.
