ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

SATURDAY'S GAMES INSTITUTE DEFEATS THISTLE Institute and Thistle met at Association Park, when Institute avenged themselves for the defeat indicted upon them by Thistle earlier in the season. Both teams H'eire at fusl strength, Lambert and Crane reappearing for Institute, while Frank Dick (whc> has just returned) mado a welcome. reappearance in tho Thistle Vaiilcs, Gibson boiiw dropped in his favour. Thistlo won tho toss aud elected to play -with the sun behind them, and the advantage of the wind. Edwards, of Thistle, was prominent cany with a good run, Wandcn heading his centre clear of danger. M'Artluir set the Institute forwards in motion, Porter nicely slipping past M'Goreim and passing to Smith, whose parting shot went behind. Accurate football >vas out of the question, tho wind being too strong. Institute wisely keptliho ball low and swung it fran wing to wing, the style of play suiting the conditions nnd their fast forwards. Ifeid Jet Smith away, lint Bell, who played a sterling game throughout, intercepted jiis pass to Hanson and sent on to Halloy, who had many interesting bouts with Bradbury nnd M'Kcnaie. On one. occasion he beat both of thos9 players, and Jiashod tho bail into .centre. Porter ruelied in and let- fly with a left-foot drive, tho ball sailing over tho bar. The ,Thistlo dofence -was caught on the hop, and breathed freely when tho ball went over. Thfetle now took matters in hand, nn.d gave Tarrant, aud Co. an anxious t.ime. Edwards,' who waft their most dangerous unit, beat M'Arthur and passed to Han't, who shot well, but Tarrant saved with confidence. -Re.i<l_ let Smith (irony, Tarrant again, saving in splendid style. M'Gdnr. who was playing liia usual forcefut game, let Porter away. Tho latter drew M'Arthur passed to Smith, who sent in a lovely centre, Houston being pulled up for olt'-side when in a favoumblo position. Porter oiul Smith rcnieatedly beat iM'Arthur, .but lisunlly M'Kenzio or Duncan (who was in goal vioe Hsgerton) . came to the rescue. •M'Gflinun passed to Edwards, who niado excellent nrogrew. JPArtlnir stopped liim, Init while lying mi the ground tho fatter handled tho ball dangerously near the panaCty line, lieid sending- the re(jullant free kick behind. Institute rallied, and M'Girr again passed to Porter, ■jvlio out into goal' when he was tackled by Redd and MArtliur. Rcid ti-ipppd Porter, and the referee awarded Institute n penalty kick. Reid and Co. clnimod that the player v.-as fouled outside tho penalty nitoa, but the referee adjudged otherwiw. Bell took the kick and sent; in a low shot, which bent Duncmi all tho way. Institute, 1; •_ Thistle 0. Thistle nettled by this reverse, made strenuous offcrls to equalise, but Wniulen and Bell were playing sale and sound, and frustrated the -efforts of tho Thist.lo forwards. Edwards nearly brought success to "his side, sending in a lovely cross, wlricli Ta.rrant cleared, with Smith nnd Dick in close aUciidmiw. Hart next sont in a high, dropmng shot, which Tarrant saved splendidly under tho orossbar. Houston received a pass from Crane, nnd, dodging Bradbury, passod on to Halley, wlvo outsprinted M'itenzio and shot, Duncan clearing splendidly, Lambert just arriving too late to catch tho_ rebound. Tho score at half-time remained unaltered.

The second half opened 'with Institute pressing, Houston and Halley being c>*>'ly conspicuous, but iPKsu'/.ie relieved with ft good kick. The Institute halves nt this stage were playing a great game. They plied their forwards with the ball, never sending it too far ahead, and allowing tho opposing forwards few opportunities of becoming dangerous. M'Arthnr beat .M'Goran and passed to Porter, ■who in turn drew M'Arthur and slipped on to Smith, whose centre Duncan cleared. Thistle forwards came on again, Edwards making progress, but Bell cleared his centre wit'lii a timely 'kick. Halley was in great form, and repeatedly he sent in centres which were always dangerous, from on? of which Lamlwrt shot, Duncan saving in splendid fashion. Institute continued to attack, Duncan again Baving from Houston. Thistle forwards were seldom allowed to cross? midfield, and their defence has not had a bigger., gruelling t'his season. They were kept at it the whole of- the second half, and towards the erid tho _ condition of tho younger team told Us tale. The occasional raids which Thistle mn.de on Institute's goal were never reallv dangerous. Crane, w'h" plied Halley with, tho ball, let the latter away on one occasion, Duncan conceding- a corner in clearing his shot, Smith on one occasion nearly mastered a score, Duncan just saving. From now on to time, Thistle continued on the defensive. Institute beintt unable to add to their score. Institute are, to be congratulated on their victory, as Thistle have practically carried nil before them since the opening game of tho season. The first half was fairly even, neither side being able to claim an advnntnse. The second half was decidedly Institute's, a proof of this beins that Tarrant never touched the ball during the second spell. For tho victors Tarrant: played well in goal, Bell was the best back on llm field. Ihe three halves played splendidly. M'Girr putting in a lot of useful work. Of an excellent forward line, Hnllev calls for soccial mention. Duncan, in goal frr Thistle, played n great ?ame, repeatedlv saving his side during the weond spell. Af'Kenzi o was the better of the two backs. Reid played a useful game, while Bradbury worked hard throughout. Edwards was the best of a mediocre forward line. ,
