NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES From Our Special Correspondents. WAIRARAPA On Friday at MaTtinborough Mr. jl. G. Eton, District Coroner, held an inquest on the body of Leonard Hepburn, a County Council employee, who was found dead on tho Ilautotia Road last Wednesday. Tho deceased was a single nianaad was subject to fits. He left his whare at 8 o'clock on Wednesday morning, .and at 11 o'clock his body was found face downward in a flooded drain on the rosdsido. A verdict was returned that death was due to asphyxiation while in a fit.
The branch of the Bank of New Zealand at Pongaroa, which was closed in May of lust year, is shortly to be reopened. The pines in Masterton Park, which were destroyed some time ago, were planted in 1877 by Mr. W. W. M'Cardle. The sixteenth prize ticket in the Trenthani Art Union was drawn by Mrs. W. M'Kenzie, ' of Manaia, Masterton. The prize consists of a canteen of cutlery, valued at .£B2. On Saturday morning the Masterton Transit Committee dealt with many applications covering foodstuffs, building materials,' machinery (milking plants), hardware, benzine, etc., the whole aggregating approximately 25 tons, which were approved. The Masterton Fire Brigade ■tens called out on Saturday evening to tho promises of Mr. W. Shaw in Perry Street, where a chimney was alight. The outbreak was quelled, however, on tho arrival of the brigade, who were delayed by engine trouble. A bogey match, played on tho Masterton golf links on Saturday, resulted as follows:—T. Horton (scr.), one down; E. Perry (5), two down; C. Perry (5), three down. Most of the dairy companies in the Carterton district have paid out up to Is. Bd. per lb. for buttor-fat, and it is anticipated that the final payment will bring it up to Is. lid. The new season will begin about August 19, and during the recess some improvements have been made to the Parkvalo and Kokotau factories. A small four-roomed cottage at Clareville, belonging to Mr. F. Meenkin, and used as a storeroom was totally destroyed by fire a few days There was no. insurance, and the origin is a mystory. , The cases against the youths charged with ringing the firebell on the Sunday evening that the announcement that peace had been signed was dismissed by the Magistrate on Friday. , Football matches played in the Wairarapa on Saturday resulted as follow:— defeated Featherston Camp. Junior—Red Star 29, defeated Carterton 0; Dalefield 11, defeated Gladstone 9.
