A Press Association cablegram from Sydney states that the Rev. J. M. Stewart has been elected Bishop of Melanesia.
D.r. R. H. Makgill, District Health Officer at Auckland, is to bo Acting-Chief Health Officer and Inspector-General of Ilospitals during tiho absence of Dr. T. 11, A. Valintine, who has received six months leave of absence. Dr. Makgill is senior officer of the Department next to Dr. Valintine. It is not certain yet if Dr. Makgill's place at Auckland will bo filled temporarily.
A Press Association telegram from Auckland states that the death occurred in a private hospital of tho Eight Rev. Dean Francis Hills, late vicar-general of Christchurch, aged G1 years. Deceased was for a number of years a professor al. St. Patrick's College. Wellington. Ho retired from activc Church work some years ago. Dr. Valintino left for Sydney yesterday by tho steamer Prinzessin. Private advico has been received of tho death of Captain Winstone Ingham, lato of tho English Forces, from throat trouble, following on influenza. His widow resides in Wellington. Mr. R. A. Kenner, a former member of the literary stall' of tho Auckland "Star," who recently ■■oturned from France, where ho had been doing work as a fiold secretary for tho Y.M.C.A., has taken up tho position •<* general secretary of tho Christchurch branch oi the Y.M.C.A.
Mr. John Heaton Rhodes, a son of the lato Mr. Q. H. Rhodes, is duo back in Christchurch from England next week. When Iho war broke out Mr. Rhodes was on his way to England. Immediately on his arrival in tho Old Country ho enlisted, and obtained a commission in tho Army Service Corpi. lie served throughout the war, being for a greater part of the timo with the forces at Salonika. Mr. JI. V. Oaverhill, who has resigned from tho staff of the City Corporation after fourteen years' service, received a presentation from his fellow-officers. Mr. H. L. Godber (city rate collector) referred to Mr. Caverhill's ability and to tho high esteem in which he was held by the staff. Mr. C. Collins (city treasurer) and Mr. R. 'fait (deputytown clerk) also spoke in eulogy of tho recipient, who suitably responded. Mr. Cavcrliill has taken up dairy farming at Silvertstream. Mr. J. Myers' will leave for Sydney to-day on a business trip.
Mr. J. Ruddell, of. tho Plasterers' Union, has been elected president of the Wellington Trades and Labour Council, vice .Mr. M. J. Rcardon.
• There died at Lincoln, Christehureli, on Tuesday morning Mr. Arthur Cookson, headmaster of the Lincoln District High School. Tho late Mr. Cookson was born on March 30, 18M, and had been connected with the teaching profession in Canterbury during the past M years. Tho late Mr. Cookson was a man of considerable musical attainments, and was prominent in the social life of his district. During the war he took a leading pari in patriotic activities in Lincoln. He was also well known in Masonic circles., Mr. Cookson leaves a widow and three 60ns.
Mr. L, G. M'Donald, of the Ashburton PoJt Office staff, wlio is being transferred to Masterfon, was met by a number of Ashburtou business men at the Bnrougli Council Chambers, and presented with a purse of sovereigns. Mr. R. Galbraith (Mayor of Ashburton), in making the presentation, referred to the esteem in which Mr. M'Donald was held by the residents.
Mr. T. S. Young, Dunedin manager of the New Zealand Exnress Company, has been transferred to the position of Christchurch manager of the company in succession to Mr. R, J. Jnv, who has resigned from the Express Company in order to assume the post of managing director of tho Canterbury Motor Company. Dr. D. Muir leaves Wellington to-day for Matamata, where he is to commence practice.
At a social gathering at the Civil Service Club last evening, Mr. P. Hiddlestone, tho well-known cricket (player, was made a presentation on the occasion of his forthcoming departure for England. Mr. C. G. Wilson occupied the chair, 'and mado eulogistic references to the interest Mr. Hiddlestoue had displayed in tho gnme. Mr. A. F. Wiren also spoke a few words, and in presenting Mr. Iliddlestone with an attache-case wished him, on behalf of the Cricket Association, an enjoyable trip and good luck. -Mr. Hiddlestoue is to leave oh August 15.
