Owing to the lack of interest displayed by the members of the friendly societies in Palmerston North tho Manawatu United Friendly Socioties' Council has decided to disband, and at a meeting this week the affairs of tho council were finally wound up. Mr. F. Coloy has been eleeted io the Horowhenua County Council to fill the vacancy caused by tho retirement of Councillor Catley.
A military .refresher camp is at present being held on the showgrounds at Palmerston North for officers and n.c.o.'s of the permanent staff and temporary staff of tho Wellington military district. The camp commander is Captain G. W. Bradcll. N.Z.S.C., and Lieutenant Thomson, N.Z.I'.S., is adjutant. The object of the oamp is to freshen up the- officer!) nnd men in the latest, methods adopted in physical drill, musketry, and training generally, so that: they will go back to their stations with all the latest information, which they in turn will impart to the territorials and senior cadets,The course will bo brought to a close on August 14. The late Mr. Thomas Harris, of Palmerston North, whose death occurred yesterday. came to New Zealand in 1859 by the sailing ship Tornado, which was lost on its return journey. He spent several years in Otago, nnd was one of llhe early settlers that went to Gabriel's Guliy. For many years he was fanning and « member of .road boards and school committees in the Raiigitikei and Wavorle.v districts. Of late vears he had resided in tho Maiiawatu district. He leaves a widow and a grown-up family, two of whom aro in business in South Africa. At the twelfth annual meeting of this Palmerston North Orpheus Society, the balance-slicot showed the society to be in a satisfactory financial condition. Tho following officers were elected for tho ensuing year:—President. Mr. I?. A, Fuller; vice-president. Mr. .T. Murray; conductor, Mr. ,T. Holmes Runnicles; hoi:, secretary, Mr. fi. H. Carson; lion, treasurer. Mr. W. Nrwlands; committee, Alessrs. H. H. J'avitt, W. T.eet, and C. Taylor; librarian, Mr. W. .Tcwett; lion, auditor, Mr. 0. H. Markiand. At a' meeting of the Manawatu Bowling Centre at Palmerston, it was. decided to support the nomination of Mr. Jteadowowift, of Wellington, for the position of vice-president of the Dominion Association for the 19)9-20 season. With regard to the champion of champion games next season it was decided that, after the centre had found the winners. adjoining centres, including Wellington, be asked to send their _ champion rinks for a day's piay in Palmerston. Mr. J. Bartholomew brought up tho question of bowl testing, and it was stated that n tester
would visit Palnierston early next next season, and if arrangements were made lie would journey to Feildrng and other greens where his presence was desired. Tho Linton Ride Club, of Palnierston North, fired its vfilurn match with Hie Raugitikei .Miniature Rillc Club at Bulls tins week, and succeeded in heating the local team. Perkins, of Levin, is a daughter of the decensed.
