Efforts to refloat, the Northern Company's steamer Aiapawa, which stranded on the Waitara. Bar on Sunday afternoon, have so far proved unavailing. The only result obtained has been'that her stern was hauled clear from the rocky boulders where she was resting. THE OAKLAND. Private advice 'has been received in Ohristchurch that the schooner Oakland, which left Samoa on March 12. arrived at Portland, Oregon, after a trip of ninetysix d;ys. , Two or three gales were : experienced during the voyage, blowing the nails .to pieces, but most of the journey was traversed in calm weather, though at one time the vessel was covering thirteen knots. It will bo remembered that the Oakland was placed' under arrest at Lyttelton pending the production of a bond -on account of a- claim for .damages .imounting to £4250, claimed by Messrs. Wright, and Go. and Messrs. W. H. Simms and Sons, or Ohristchurch. The v.essel was finally released on December 24, and left Lytte'ton for Apia on December 30. It is understood that the master of the. Oakland, Captain Wendt, upon her arrival at Portland, signed off that vessel and took command of ono of the new American wooden steamers. This total will ho materially decreased before- the beginning of next week. The Prinzcssin, Suffolk, Shropshire, »ud Ronn are to go out to-ilay, and the Tahiti, Moana, Port NicTtolsou. LILY PUTS INTO SYDNEY. The schooner Lily, which left Dunedin oil July 9 for Tonga, to load copra for San Francisco, is rcportc'd by a Press Association .message to have arrived at Sydney yesterday. The message conveyed no reason of the schooner putting into port. BAILEES' MOVEMENTS. Mr. W. Archibald, of Auckland, lias been advised that tlio schooner Vnlinarie sailed from Adelaide on July 18 for Auckland. The scow Zingara sailed from Sydney on July 22 for diatonic. The barque Hothjay Bav left Adelaide yesterday for Wellington. The barque Daniel, which loaded a cargo of timber at 'ffhangarci, reached Adelaide after a Btormy passage of 55 days. E. E. STERLING FOB AUCKLAND. The cabled advice annoificlng that the E. E. Sterling hwl sailed for Wellington haß proved incorrect; later advice received by W. Archibald, the Auckland agent,, statin* that she left Newcastle for Auckland on July 25. She is a six-masted barquentine, and is claimed to be one of the largest vessels of her kind afloat. She arrived at Sydney in April last with general cargo from Sau Francisco. On her Dresent trip' she has 4225 tons of coal for tho New Zealand Government.

With mutiny aboard, her jibboom and fore-topgallant mast missing, her decks swept clean of all'small boats except ono. and a casualty list of two men swept overboard, the American four-masted baroueutine Charles P. Crocker put Into Pago Pago in distress -on January 28, according to recent advices; When half way between Tonga, and Samoa, the vessel enlountered a terrific hurricane. Nearly all sail was carried away, oven that which was reefed. Captain P. 11, Wintfier preferred charges in the High Court of Ainevica.n Samoa against four of his seamen for mutiny, and refusing to do their duty.
