TRAGEDY ON THE WATERFRONT.

Early yesterday morning a Maltese named Bezzina, e'ged 30 years, committed suicide in the vicinity of Taranaki Street Wharf. The circumstances of tho ease are that at 2.30 a.iii. John Brown Kaine, chief officer of the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Hona, at present lying at the' Taranaki Street Wharf, lieaTd a struggling and. splashing in the ,water. Ho saw a man in the water, offered him a stick, with tho intention of pulling him out, but the man replied,- "Don't save me." Mr. Raino then called out to tbe uightwatchman, end a rope was thrown to the man, but he refused to take it. The nightwatchman went away tQ procure a torch, and during hie absence the man disappeared. A search was at once , instituted, and the clothes of the deceased were found on the wharf. A blood-fitained razor was found in the pocket of the coat. The body was recovered, floating near tho wharf, shortly after noon yesterday, by Sergeant Lopdell and Constables J. Kynn and Staniland, and was removed to the morgue. Tho deceased's throat was cut, presumably with the razor found in his clothes. An inquest will be held. It is understood' tliat tho deceased wns an hotel worker.
