SCHOOLGIRL FALLS OFF A WHARF
PROMPT RESCUE. Whilst playing on the Ivaraka Bay wharf at about U a.ui. yesterday a nine-year-old girl named Verna Wilson, v.'ho resides at "The Lions," Karaka Day, fell into tho water. Tho cries of her distressed sister reached the ears of Mr. Paul Latham, who is convalescent alter an attack of influenza, mid was still in bed in his house opposito the luut of the wharf. Without any hesitation Mr. Latham jumped out of bed and rushed down tho wharf, to find that tho little girl in the water, though she could not swim, was lying oil her back and paddling with her hands in the ice-cold water. Mr. Latham took a header off tho steps, and suon brought the child ashore. She was at once taken to lier homo and put to bed, and a couple of hours later seemed none the worse for her immersion. Mr. Latham confessed to feeliug a little shaky after his experience, but recovered during the day.
