INCREASED FARES AND CONGESTION
HEAVY COST OP WORKING ,
The' working expenses in connection •with the Wellington municipal tramways is the biggest financial trouble the City Council has to face. The expense of running a big transit service such as (ho electa tramways at such a time ss tho present is startling' even to those who havo to <lo with it every day and ell the year round, yet with the price of coal unci heavy wages, bills they are unable to find any remedy. The figures presented to the Tramways Coinmitteo yesterday •showed that whilst tho revenue for tho four weeks ended July 21 increased by .£2061 as compared with the corresponding period of last year, the working expenses leaped 1 up ,£1)695 in tho same time. The figures for the four weeks ended July 21 (with the usual comparison) are as follow:— i ' 1919. 1918.
