COMPLIMENTARY "SOCIAL"

An enjoyable social gathering was held at Karon on Friday night, when the members of the local School Committee entertained the teaching staff for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr. M'Kenzie, tho retiring headmaster, and to Mi6S Macalister, tho infant mistress, both of whom have recently received promotion, and also for the purpose of welcoming tho new headmaster/ Mr. J. C. Burns, M.A. Tho large, infant: schoolroom was prettily decorated. A progressive euchre party was held, the prize being won by Mrs. Whithair. Svpper was afterwards served, and several speeches wero made. Mr. Nimmo, tho chairman of the School Comnfltteo. referred in terms of high praise to tho work accomplished by Mr. M'Kenzia and Miss Macalister during their period of service in the Karori School, and expressed regret at losing their services. He stated that MV. M'Keuzio, during his- three and a half years nt Karori, had created a very high standard in the school, which Mr. Burns would find hard to beat. Ho was satisfled, however, that tho committee's selection was going to prove «. good one, and already Mr. Burns had given evidence of sterling morit. The committee felt that it. was to be congratulated on 6eouring 60 competent a headmaster. He also extended the congratulations of the cominitte'o to Miss Pir.der on her appointment to the vacancy caused by Miss Macalister's retirement. Miss Macalister had been at Karori School for a number of years, had greatly herself to tho children and parents, and had proved herself a highlj'-efficient teacher. Otlier members of the committee supported these remarks, and the teachers referred to suitably responded. Musiciil items were given by Miss Edwards, Miss Pinder. Miss Macalister, and Mr. Burns. A very pleasant evening concluded with the singing of the National Anthem and "Aula Lang Syne."
