MR. BROWNELL'S FAREWELL ADDRESS. At the Y.M.C.A. yesterday Afternoon, Mr. E. C. Brownell, who'has relinquished the position of general national secretary of tho Now Zealand Y.M.C.A., to take up the general secretaryship of tho Melbourno Y.M.C.A., delivered a farowell address. Mr. Brownell chose as his subject "The New Era," and in tho course of an interesting speech, made somo observations on the \york of the Y.M.C.A. (luring the reconstruction period. Ho referred to the spirit of brotherhood that had bound men together during the war. lie considered that the Y.M.C.A. could play an important part in maintaining this spirit. It was only by fostering a truo brotherhood among mon, that many of tho pioblems with which the Church and society generally arc faced, would be solved. Mr. Brownell guvo an account of the expansion of Y.M.C.A. enterprise in foroißii lands, and emphasised the necessity of a still greater extension in view of tho important movements now. taking place in India, China, and elsewhere. An appeal was made by the sneaker to those present to support the efforts of the local association in _ itswork among the young men of t.l.c city. Ho felt confident that tho Y.M.C.A. possessed the necessary machinery to do effective work during tho difficult days ahead. ■ Mr. H. W. TCerslev was chairman of tho meeting and ho took tho opnorlunity of bidding farewell, on behalf of tho members of the Wellington Y.M.C.A, to Mr. Brownoll.
