THE TELEPHONE DIRECTORY

Sir—A copy of tho contract to supply tho abovo "every six months" appears on the front cover of every issue. I note in a local in Tire Dominion of August 1 that the delay in supplying the public with tho issue duo last Juno is blamed to "the war," yet strange to say. during tho war period, the directory appeared regularly and fairly up to duo date, as subscribers and users know. It is only sinca the war period that the wretched delay I had to complain of through your columns has shown itself. And why blame the poor printer? I notico that a correspondent who apparently cannot justify or explain his Department's neglect, and so doesn't attempt to, tries to suggest that I am not a subscriber, and forgets that I am one of the public to whom he is responsible. It is but slating the obvious when I say that almost all the largest business concerns who rent telephones appear in tho list under their own name, whether they be institutions, firms, or*companies, and tho name of tho one who pays the rent and those for whoso use tho telephone is kept more often than not do not appear. Suffice it to say that in tho past eighteen years I have paid iuore in telephone rent and fees than the, majority of peoplo wlioso names appear in the list. In tho businpss I have been in for many years few names aro better known in New Zealand than mine. I wrote also on behalf of tho thousands of "users" who temporarily rent tho > phono every day,' but aro entitled to their full contract privileges. In "Wellington alone we have over fifty coin-in-tlie-slot 'phones, tho names of tho users of%hich are hardly ever known. I must thank you very heartily for starting motion in the wheels of officialdom. To-day I find that some peoplo havo received the long-ovcrduo lists—l Rm ' et °" H.'H. THOMPSON. August 1, 1919.
