THE REV. J. CHAPMAN AND THE MASTER TAILORS
ME. MILLIGAN MAKES AN OFFER. Sir—When I challenged the statement (quoted by the Rev. Mr. Chapman re the master tailors) in a recent issue of your paper the rev. gentleman replied, Oil, it was not me, it was Mr. Reardon who said it. Thus we have the spectacle of a clergyman creating ft sensation by repeat, ing a statement which was contrary to fact, and then trying to escape the responsibility by sheltering.behind another man. Mr. Chapman forgets that the disseminator of a slander is held equally guilty by the Courts. In this case Mr. Chapman has magnified the statement in a way that I am sure was never intended by Mr. Reardon. Mr. Chapman lias now written another letter in which he says that he can sub. stantiate every statement he has rnado in the pulpit.' Well, then, here is his chance.. If he proves that his reference to the master tailors is correct, 1 will pay for the "best cleric 6iiit" which he can select and have rnado by his own tailor. Further, if h9 proves that the said statement is half true I will donate JSIO 10s. to the city orphanages, and £5 ss. to the same if he establishes that it is- 25 per cent. true. Permit me to add that I have made a careful estimate of tho percentage of fact in said statement, and' find it not more than 2i. I submitted same to a publio accountant, who endorses my figures. I submit in conclusion that Mr. Chapman must now either prove what he repeated about the tailors last Sunday night or retract and make honourable amends for bearing incorrect witness about a number of his fellow-citizens.—l am, etc., D. MILLIGAN.
