Mr. A. A. Toogood, J.P., after holding I offico as treasurer to thn Wairarapa Racing Club for a lengthy period, has resigned from the position. Mr. A. L. Webster has been elected as presidnt, and Mr. T. Ingley vice-presi-dent, of the South Wairarapa Working Men's Club (Greytown). The Wairarapa Automobile Association Mutual Insurance Company has paid out insurances totalling .£205 in connection with tho destruction by fire of a Carterton motor garage. The.Kov. Ford Hutchinson and Mrs. Hutchinson left Eketahuua on Wednesday en route for England. Mr. Thomas Parsons, Mayor of Eketahuria. who N has been rather seriously indisposed for some time, is recovering. Councillor A. Forsberg has been appointed to represent the Mauriceville County Council on the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board,' in succession to tho late Councillor Seymour. The death occurred at Pirinoa yesterday morning of Mr. V. A. Sheath, a well-known Wairarapa resident, who lias been farming in the East Coast district for many years. He is survived by a widow. In order to enable teachers and pupils to 'travel on their holidays before the passenger traffic restrictions came into force, the Masterton District High School broke up,on Thursday, instead of yesterday. -"' ' Supplies of sugar are at a premium in Masierton' at present, and many grocers are limiting customers to specified quantities. ' The game-6hooting season in the Wairarapa, which terminated on Thursday, was generally unproductive of good sport. Eruit is selling at high prices in Masterton at the present time. Lemons are being retailed at sixpence each. It is expected that the Masterton Dairy Company's factory will open for the seaeon about ihe middle of August. The cold weather of the past week has been responsible for the deaths of many weak-conditioned sheep in tho Masterton district. Ten motor-cars nnd twelve motor-cycles were registered by the Masterton Borough Council during the month of July. Some commotion was caused in Masterton about b p.m. on Thursday by the arrest of a man who had imbibed so freelv that his condition bordered on delirium tremens. After a great amount of trouble tho man was conveyed to the police cells, whence issued many territyin» sounds, which disturbed the'neighbourhood, until, weil after midnight. As it result the man was yesterday brought before the Magistrate's Court, and ordered to underfill seven days' medical treatment. This is the first case of drunkenness to occupy the local cells for over six weeks. The annual meeting of tho Masterton Bowling Club was held on Thursday evening. The president, Mr. W. 1. Grundy, being in the chair. Ihe report and balance-sheet were adopted, and officers elected for tho ensuing year. live new members were elected. The Building Committee reported that promisod donations towards alterations to tho pavilion amounted to about .£l2O, and that certain members had agreed to lend tho club a further .£IOO. It was decided to hold over the improvements until tho end of the season, and that in- the meantime tlie Ground Committeo endeavour to find out what is the beat position to erect the uavilion. A programme for club competitions was decided upon, nnd it was suggested that in the Shield and Booth Cup competitions the Carterton Club should pluy in the northern section. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring officers. Mr. Francis Holmes has been appointed to represent the Masterton Chamber, of Commerce on the committee of business men at Wellington which has been appointed to advise as to what goods' shall be carried on the railways. Owing to continuous rain great diflicii#v is being experienced in carrying out road repairs in the Mauricevillo county. A social evening was held by the Masterton Chess Club on Thursday evening, to welcome home Mr. Paul kummer nnd Mr. F. Foule, -who returned recently from the front. Messrs. H. Kumroer, G. Jackson, nnd A. Morgan are also returned soldier-members.
