SWIMMING
MEETING OF NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. By Tolenrriwh—Prosfl Association • Christchurch, August 1. At a meeting of the Council of tho New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association to-night the following motion was carried:—"That tho allocation of the New Zealand championships shall take place at tho annual conference of centres, such allocation to bo for tho next season only following each annual conference." In reply to a letter from tho Wellington Centre if. was decided that the Lyall Bay Surf Club and all surf clubs were eligible for affiliation, in the same manner as swimming clubs. Ladies' clubs could also affiliate. It was decided to hold up the allocation of the second prize in the Wellington schools' championship (boys), pending satisfactory evidence being forthcoming as to the swimmer's age. A letter was read from Mr._ G. Hearn, secretary of the International Amateur Swimming Association, who Btated that in hi? opinion a bath assistant or attendant would internationally bo considered a professional. ■ Should he leave the employment, however, and take up some other occupation there was no reason that he should not lie reinstated as an amateur. The letter said the Amateur Swimming Association did not vegirtl a bath manager as a professional if he were only employed as a manager and not as an attendant on (swimming. He considered that if the N.Z.A.S.A. allowed bath attendants to compete as amateurs it would at p:».'sent disqualify I lie New Zealand swimmers from comni'ting in other 'countries and also at the Olympic Games. At present tho writer found it impossible to coll a meeting of tho federation, as tho feeling against enemy delegates would be too bitter.' The letter was received.
