ATTACK ON GERMAN MILITARISTS
COMPLAINS THAT COUNTRY
WAS DUPED
(By Tolograpn-Presß Association-Copyright Copenhagen, July 2G (delayed). Hen , Erzberger, defending himself in tho National Assembly against accusations regarding his past policy, said that Germany was kept in .ignorance of England's adoption of conscription, ■ tho effects of tho blockade, and the effects of the submarine war, which bad brought in America. For four years Germany was under a. military dictatorship. He detailed the Pope's suggestions for peace in 1917, which would have paved the way for negotiations, especially in inquiring for a declaration of independence and reparation for Belgium, and in implying that England was willing to make peace. The then Chancellor, Hen- Michaelis, gave an ambiguous reply. This statement roused the Conservatives, and Hen- Erzberger declared that they had caused the prolongation .of the war. The Socialists added to the storm, shouting that tho Conservatives were murderers.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [The above speech has been the subject of considerable comment during the past week, and owing presumably to the cable delays, has followed instead of preceding the comment.]
