ON AUCKLAND EETAIL MARKET. ' There is an acute shortage of bacon on the retail market, 6ays the Auckland "Star." 'The head of tho bacon branch of-one of the leading city grocery establishments stated that the position was fiuch that to customers ordering a side of bacon they could only offer a pound of .rashers. The demand for bacon wa6 so keen that they could do with a thousand sides, but there was no hope of obtaining supplies for. a week. It is the opinion of a bacon curer that the shortage is due to fanners turning/their attention from pigs' to mora lucrative Bources, such' 1 as. tho fattening of stocky nnd to supplying dried milk factories ■with milk. Eroin the .dried milk districts practically no pigs are coming forward. . That there is a shortage of pigs has been evident for weeks past, .says tho "Star." Several weeks past a barrow pig told at Westield -realised .£lO 155., and prices continue abnormal, last week s rates-exceeding the previous week's high rates. : ... -.•
