WANGANUI AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY "UNABLE TO OBTAIN SHOWGROUNDS. ,'By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent. Wanganui, July 3fl. The Wanganui Agricultural Society finds itself in a peculiar dilemma in respect to its showgrounds, and tlio indications point to tho winding-up of the association's affairs. Strange though it may appear, the association was dependent upon tho racecourse for its show, and now that the privilege is to bo taken away it cannot get a suitable sito. A proposal was made to secure a lease of a, borough reserve, and. there seemed every prospect of the scheme being s-ucoessfully carried out. Labour unions, however, raised the cry. that the farmers were filching the rights of the people; and 6trong protests were consequently made against land required for a housing scheme boing handed over to wealthy farmers, who it was claimed should dip their hands into their own pockets and purchase a freehold site. In the face of the opposition made the Borough Council will not definitely give the land and the association now proposes winding up. At all events a notice of motion has been given to that effect, and there now seems to be.no prospect whatever of a, show being held this year.
