NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By Glencoe.)'
i To-morrow is the equine birthday, and all horses are one year older. ' When Form Up (list. 91b.) finished third in tho. Flying Handicap at Ricearton on Saturday, he came from a long way back, and his showing did not lose him any friends for the Winter Cup. Tho brood maro Reno is this season to bo mated with All Red. Boniforin's list 'for the coming season is full at 50 guineas. Coalition, .in-chargo of J. Lowe, was shipped south last evening. Tirana .was walked-in from Trentham yesterday, and will-bo shipped to New •Plymouth to-day. Consequent upon his good showing at Riccarton, whero he ran 'oft' at the last fence when well clear, of tho opposition, Locholla is now.in good demand for tho Grand National Steeplechase. _ Ho will most like'.y be ridden by 11. Lorigan. Trainer Fred Tilley's team reached home (Fordell).-on .Wednesday .of last week, having been walked all the way from Trentham, a distance of about 130 miles. ; A Christchurch writer says: "Troublesome -is not moving as freely as ho should, while Bon Revo looks lighter than he did at Trentham." f When Loyal Arch was getting her legs hosod one day last week, sho slipped on tho concreto and fell, with a result that she hurt a kneo, which has filled badly. Sho is stiff and soro on it, and A. M'Auley is fomenting the limb. Her track task on Monday was a round or two of jogging in the middle on the lead. Whilst being loaded at.Dunedin, Ki'lboyne got ono of his hind feot crushed by the door of the box, and ho is still a bit tendor on it. The southerner is cxpect?d to be quite himself by the timo the Winter Cup comes on for decision. Master Strowan (F. Ellis) was schooled over a round of the country at Riccarton on Monday. Striding along at.his own pace, the Strowan gelding fenced perfectly his .jumping being a pleasure to watch. Ho looks a greatly improved l.orse since the Wellington meeting. It is stated that ]•'. Ellis will ride him in tho National Steeplechase. At Ricearton on Tuesday Sir Solo (Hegnitv). Omahu (M'Donnld), and Cynic (F. Ellis) were companions in a round of the schooling hurdles. Sir Solo mid Omahu lumped in lino style, the former gaining friends by his good fencing. . Cynic, pecked and ran round tlio third fence, unseating Ellis, and could not be persuaded to junin it. The three jumpers were afterwards separately given a.strong round on' the sand. Their timo for the round over the hurdles was I-inin. 53?0c. Tho' injuries sustained by Arlington when lie fell at Riccarlon on Saturday were more severe than at first anticipated, and he will not fulfil his engagements at the Grand National meeting. F. Douglas,-who got a bad fall from Afcahaeri on Saturday, was taken to the Hospital on Sunday. - Ho was badly crushed and will have to lay up for souio days. Tt is renorlod that the Tnvorcargill and Southland Cup winner, Marsn, has gone wrong, and is unlikely to race again for a long time. Tho nonicliy Stecnlochnso, tho principal ovent at tho Christchurch Hunt Club!s meeting on Saturday, provided
ci chapter of accidents. Sam Pan fell at the Kennels double the first time, and Nita. two fences further on, whero Morecnmbc ran oil'. The other six were in closo order passing tlic stand, but Arlington fell nt the post and rails, v liile Rolling Tide* came down at tlio sod wall. This left four horses in the contest. Gang Awa', who had been out in front all the way, fell at tho next obstacle, the brush at the top of the .straight, and the raco then looked a 'certainty for Lochella, but ho ran off at tho last fence. Boro and Dardanelles had a rare tussle over the last fur'.ong. Bore winning by a narrow margin. Altogether it was a sorry exhibition on the part of a field which included several horses who are expected to race in the best company at the Grand National meeting next month.
