There are now 500 pupils attending the institution. Arrangements' have been made to raise money oy way of dchenturra for the erect.on of hostels iu connection with the Palmerston North High School—tho prcsout boys' school and the girls' school in course of erection. The Board of Governors has received several satisfactory replies from persons willing to advance sums on security. The nominal roll of tho school now totals 331— i!!J0 boys and 151 girls. The Puliuerslon North Chamber of Commerce discussed at some length at its meeting this week tho question of providing more breathing space in connection with all future subdivisions, and tho Borough Council was taken to task for its alleged neglect in the past. Tho present provisions were described as inadequate and some of the recent subdivisions wore described as a disgrace '"o the community. It was contended that Ike by-laws should be revised so as to l.sve smno regard to town-planning. Ultinwtely the matter was shelved till next meeting in order to enable Mr. M. H. Eliott, who is a member of the council, to mulje inquiries as to the exact nature of the proposed new by-laws, and report. On tho motion of Mr. E. de J. Clero it was decided to recommend to the Borough Council that all new roads be formed in permanent material according to the latest town-planning methods, and provided with sewerage, water, and gas at tho cost of the owner.
