TREATMENT OP AN ENGLISH | BRIDE SOLDIER TO PAY MAINTENANCE A rather pathetic case of neglect on the part of a returned soldier to provide his wife with maintenance was dealt with by Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Arrested at Wauganui George Bernard pleaded guilty to a charge of Having failed to provide his wife with adequate maintenance. Mrs. Bernard asked His Worship to make an order for separation and maintenance, and stated Uat she had . married tho accused in England. On arrival in Wellington they stayed for two days at a city hotel, and 011 the third day the accused left her at the Post Office. She was to wait fur him there, but he failed to return. Asked if he had any questions to put. to his wife, the accused said Jdiat he admitted he had done a cowardly thing, and he was prepared to make amends. His Worship to Mrs. Bernard: The accused wants you to strike out the old score and he is prepared to make good. Mrs. Bernard; I will never trust luiu The accused further stated that lie went to see some friends at Wanganui and did not tell his wife that he was going. He had another week of his privilege leave to go before he was diecharged. At present had no money and. had not yet arranged for employment. He was a barman by occupation. His Worship said he would defer the mattes of a separation order, as he thought the case was one in which the parties should make it up and resume cohabitation. Oil the matter of maintenance the accused would be ordered to pay 30s. per week forthwith.
