PRESIDENT WILSON'S POSITION.
New York, July 23. The New York "Times" correspondent at Washington says it is understood that President Wilson informed Republican Senntor.s that he was compelled to give the German privileges in Shantung to Japan, otherwise Japan would have withdrawn from tho Peace Conference. Britain nnd Franco had promised Shantung to Japan in order to induce Japan to cuter the war, and when the matter come up at tho Peaco Conference the two Powers asked President .Wilson- to deal with tho situation, and'he found it necessary to keep tho promise to Japan.—Aus.-N.Z.
