NGAIO V. WOUKING MiEN'S CLUB. The above match was, by the courtesy of tiio Wellington Chess Uub, played at 52 -Cuba Street 011 Wednesday Tiie play was of it most interesting nature. A telegram was received Irom Mr. A. Clemas, lion, secretary of the ■Musterton Chess Club, conveying best wishes for an enjoyable contest, wishes - that iVere'greati.y appreciated and fully realised.- Tito"earlier result*- Jeft honours easy, the wins of' Messrs. Faulkiior, .Whitehead, and''Eton tor 1 tlio' Working Men's Cliib 'being- offset by tiie wins of Messrs. Lindsay, Green, and Gibson for Ngaio. ' A dnnv at 'rjoard 15.'(Coulter v. Matejka) still left the teams equal. Ngaio then made a great spurt, wius by Messrs. Carnmn, .Glasgow, Croxton, and Westbrooke givfng them a. useful lead of four games, and putting them in a safo position. But'although, tho AVorking Men's Club could not win tho match, they could draw it by winning the four remaining games (boards ], 2, -1 and 11), and this they succeeded in doing with a fine "late run." Ait exceptionally hard-fought contest thus ended in a tie, each side -scoring 7J points. During the evening a very cordial'welcome was given to Mr. G. A. .Jones, the Mastcrton champion, who was recently promoted to tho charge of tlio Johnsonville School. Before leaving Masterton he was made a life member of the local Chess Club, to which lie has been a tower of strength. for the past ten year.?. The full score of tlio match is as follows

GENERAL NOTES.

Tho annual'tclegraphic match Otago v. Wellington is scheduled to commence oil Saturday evening next at G o'clock. The local side will ba somewhat weaker than usual on this occasion. The Otago team, on tho other hand, is an exceptionally strong one, and should give. an excellent account of itself.

_ Wairara pa players held their North v.' South niateh at Greytown recently, when tho south team won handsomely, scoring .seven games to North's three. Two'wellknown Congress players lien red at board 1, where J. A, Connell (South) won from I'. luimmor (North). t The M'asterton Chess Club lias convened a gathering of Wairarapa players for next Thursday'as a "welcome hoine" to .Mr. Paul Kummer, who recently retiir'ned from active service ,by the Kigonm. '

The late Sir John Dcnuiston, whose death was reported from Christchurch on Tuesday last, was formerly president of tho New Zealand Chess Association. That he was an exceptionally strong player, and had a wide knowledge of "the books" was evident during the last Now Zpaland Chamnionship Congress (held in Christ'chureh during the Christmas-New Year holidays, 1014-J5). He was a reculitr attendant at tlie sessions, and it often happened that complex positions arose in thn mid-game, or end game, during tho progress of the championship contest. ITo frequently discussed these "knotty" positions with the writer of these notes, who cft-imot recall n '■ingle instance where Sir John Deimiston's view and summing up of a difficult nnsition was aI: fault.
