SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

INSTITUTE DEFEAT Y.M.C.A. !

Institute and Y.JI.C'.A. met at Association Park under ideal weather conditions, the result being a win [or Institute by 5 goals to 3. Y.M.C.A. were without the services of Trott and J. Ives, 'tlieir places being taken by Pa Urn (nil old Y.M.C\\. player who has just returned , from service.) and Ward re-, spcctivoly. Institute were at full strength, M'Arthur being again able to resume, whib Lambert made a. welcome re-appearance at centre forward. Y.M.C.A. playing ng.iin.st the sua weru early on the defensive, 'i'lie Institute forwards, ably supported by tlieir halves, were in fine fettle, causing the Y.iI.C.A. defence no end of anxiety. Combined forward play by Lambert, Porter, and Houston resulted in' Hal ley sending behind. Y.M.C.A. tried hard to cross mid field, but tile Institute halves allowed them no liberties, M'Artluir and Crane passing; to tlieir forwards to perfection. I ATGirr securcd from n goal-kick ?nd ! passed to Porter, who tricked Ives and | passed to Halley, who came running in at express sp«d and -sent in u shot ; which Sinclair only saw when the ball re- ' bounded off the fence. Institute, 1; | Y.M.C.A., 0. Y.M.C.A. rallied, but ! made the mistake of invariably sending 1 the ball to the right wing, where Crane and Hell usually cleared without much | difficulty. Institute, who were masters ! of the situation, came on again, and | M'Arthur sent the ball on to J. Smith, j u no beat Baker aud shot at goal, Sinclair clearing. L'orror securcd and passed to i Lambert, who converted. Institute, 2; Y.M.C.A., 0. After this second reverse j Y.M.C.A. had more of tlio play, Les. | Smith sending in a good centre which j Wandeii cleared. Ballard was next no- j tiewtbie for good footwork. M'Arthur intercepted a pass to K. Smith and ssnt on to J. Smith, whose parting shot went over tho bar. Jjlford received a pass from Ives and sent on to K. Smith, who . beat M'Arthur and shot fori goal. Tarrant. fumbled the swerving ball, und ' Paton rushing in, scored. Institute, 2; Y.M.C.A., 1. From the kick-oft" Houston tricked'Stephenson anil passed to Halley, who easily beat Ward an;! shot for goal, Sinclair saving at the expense of a corner, which Halley sent b.-hind. Institute forward, abi.y led i.y >, uni'i 'rt, cann.again, and Porter swung the ball out to Halley, who passed to Houston at the right moment, the latter's shot beating Sinclair. Institute, 3; Y.M.C.A., 1. The second half was full ,of exciting incidents, both goals being' visited in turn. J. Smith and K. Smith on the Institute right and Y.M.C.A. left resp?c- . tively, were very clever with the ball. A free kick against M'Girr outside the Institute penalty area looked dangerou;. .but Wanden clearcd\ Porlei' and Smith transferred play to the Y.M.C.A. penalty area, where Porter forced a corner off Baker. J. Smith took the kick and landed the tall in the goal-mouth, where Halley cleverly headed through. \lnstitute, 4; Y.M.C.A., 1. Y.M.C.A. from this stage onwards niade a spirited tiphill fight. Most of their dangerous raids came from K. Smith, who \yas in

groat form. Time and again lie sent in lovely centres, which were only foiled "fey the alertness of Wanden and Bell. Success at least rewarded K. Smith's centres, Les. Smith converting from close in. .Institute, -1; Y.M.C.A., 2. Y.M.C.A. came on again, Tarrant saving splendidly from Elford. Y.M.C.A. were awarded a free kick juet outside the 1 18 yards lino, Tarrant conceding a corner in savin? Elford's shot, which M'Girr cleared. Ward l r et Los.. Smith away, and lie sent in a good shot which Tarrant saved, but Paton caught the ball on the rebound and scored. Institute, 4; Y.M.C.A., 3. The game now. became very fast, Institute enlivened matters, Sinclair having an anxious time. M'Girr, wiio gave Ballard few opportunities to shine, passed to J. Smith on the halfway lino, and the' latter outsprinted Baker, dribbled the ball up to the penalty, and cut into goal, giving Sinclair no chance with his shot. Institute, .5;. Y.M.C.A., 3. Soon afterwards M'Arthur was injured and had to leave the field. Play continued to be very_ fast, neither side, being able to add to its score.

Institute's success was well merited, especially in the first half, when they had*easily the best of the play. Sinclair could not be blamed for the large score against his side. Both Y.M.C.A., backs played well, although Baker was partially to blame for the second jjoal by stopping and appealing for offside instead of playing on. Ives was the best of the Y.M.C.A. halves. TCnowles Smith was the best forward on the field. His centres were always dangerous. Ulforrt played well in the second half, Ballard was overshadowed by M'Girr, -and Paton was not in the limelight apart, from his two goals. Tarrant as usual played well, but should have stopped tho first goal. Bell was the best back on the field; M'Arthur and Crane were the pick '.of the halves. Halley played a sterling gjinie, his first goal being of the lightning order. J. Smith's goal was the gem of the match.
