KARORI BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING QF ' THE COUNCIL. The Mayor (Mr. B. G. 11. Burn) presided at the fortnightly .meeting o'K the Karon Borough Council held. Inst evening. There were present: Councillors R. L. Tingey, J. C. Fulton. E. Harrison, J. W. Jfenderson, L. G. Porter,- J. Burns, and J. Cauijliley. The New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association wrote forwarding a copy of the report of the Lands Committee as adopted by the recent conference of the association, held in Christchurch. . It was resolved to -allow Iho letter and the report to lie on the table and lo discuss the matter at n future meeting. The Mayor, in approving of this course, said the way the soldiers were being exploited in respect to farming lauds was scandalous. The price asked for land for soldiers' settlement by private owners was terrible. If was not merely that they wanted an increase of ICO per cent., Mr. Burn declared, but in most cases over 1000 per cent. The Hui'tly Town Board wrote suggesting that the Karori Council should seek the supnovt of'the local bodies in respect, to' the Karori Council's remit, forwarded to the Municinal Associations' Conference. The remit referred to reads .as-fol-lows :—"Thnt'owing to the rrreat increase of cost, of material and labour and. tho continual reduction in Hie valuation roll under section 3G of the Valuation of Land Act, 1!)08, the limit of three halfpence in the pound on the capital value is insufficient to carry on the ordinary work, of a borough, and that Ihe limit be now raised to provide for {'he-extra cost.". It was decided, to accede to the request and to send a circular lei ler to the local bodies in the neighbourhood.
