» l ATTEMPT TO RAID THE ARMOURY ' RETURNED SOLDIER KILLED BY A SENTRY (By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright Melbourne, July 21. Tho conclusion of tho Peace oelebrations was marred by a riot, caused by the supposed arrest of a soldier. A crowd of tailors, soldiers, and civilians attacked the police at the Town Hall, but was driven. back after several charges by mounted police. Many stones and bottles were thrown by the rioters, and there were a number of minor injuries oh both sides. The streets were not cleared until after midnight. Eleven arrests were made. On Sunday night a party of Bailors and soldiers marched to the Victoria Barracks, and attompted to raid lie armoury. Warning had been received, and the armoury wa6 guarded with machineguns. Tho rioters Ercd several shots at a sentry, who was compelled to-fire in self-defence, and fatally -wounded a returned soldier named O'Connor. Mounted troops dispersed the rioters, and a ntimber of arrests were made.—Pxess Assn.
