Diplomatic advices from Pokiiig indicate that tho Chinese Government has been placed in an extremely embarrassing position by the refusal of Chinese delegates to sign tho Treaty. It was pointed out that China fears Japan may not withdraw the troops from Kaiiichou unless China signs the Treaty.— Aus.-N.Z. Cublo Assn. .PATRIOTS' GRIM PROTEST. (Rec. July 19, 9.20 a.m.) New York, July 12. Mr. King, president of the Chinese National Welfare League, has received a message from Peking saying that a delegation of Chinese patriots endeavoured to commit suicide in the presence of Hushi Chong, President of China, as a protest against the Shantung settlement. Three members of the delegation succeeded in severely wounding themselves. Hushi Chong told the delegation that the Treaty which gives Shantung to Japan must be signed.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. JAPAN THE WORLD'S SABRE RATFLER SENATOR SHERMAN'S PREDICTION. Washington, July 17. Senator Sherman (Republican), speaking in the Senate, urged the United, States to refuse to acknowledge the Shantun? agreement, which, he said, was tainted and poisoned. The professed altruism of tho Allies over Shantung would enable Japan to fill Germany's role as the world's sabre rattler, with British and Japanese interests in the Far East identical.
