STOCKS OF BUTTER

« . , SHOETAGE IN MANAWATU. By Telegraph-Special Correspondent, Ralmerston North, July 17. It seems to l>s an extraordinary position that in a dairying district such as the Manawatu that supplies of butter should run short, hut, nevertheless, such is the case, and until the new season's supply begins to come in towards the end of next month there is no chance of replenishing stocks, which, are already very low. Householders aro now faced with tho possible position of having to do without butter for the best part of the month. Interviewed to-day, Mr. Bendall. secretary of the New Zealand Farmers' Dairy Union, stated that all his company hail in slock was about five tons of whey butter,.all the better class already having gone into the hands of the retailers. The reason for the shortage in supplies so far as his company was concerned was duo to tho fact Oh at the extremely unsatisfactory weather experienced during Juno had caused supplies to fall off to such an extent that they were unable to obtain a surplus reserve to put into cold storage, as had always been. done. The result was that instead of having a reservo to depond upon for July, and the early part.of August, they 'had run right out and-had no stocks a.t all. He estimated that it would bo at least three weeks before tho first of the new season's supplies camo forward, and with the unpropitious weather likely to be. experienced during that time, it might bo evon later, while it would be still longer before anything in tho shape of a regular supply could be <;xpccted. There was no chance of getting butter from other places, as they all were in the same position. Incidentally, it is interesting to note ! that further down the line at Otaki, the J centre of another rich dairying distinct, the.ro is also an acuto shortage of bnttor, supplies having to be obtained from Wellington. .',
