4 EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST. The inquest concerning the death ot Mrs Katherine Mary Green, of Bay Road, Kilbirnie, who died as a result of injuries received throush being knocked down i'ov a taxi-cab on Tussdav, was onened by the Coroner, Mr. W. G. ' Riddel], S.M., at the Courthouse yesterday. Sergeant Cruicksliank conducted the inquiry, Mr. 1 11. F. 'O'Learv watched proceedings nn behalf of the 'driver of the taxi-cab, W. >Doll, and Mr. P. J. O'Regan represented ! the relatives. The husband of the deceased, John Green, said his wife was 47 years of age, and sho had left, two children,. 13 und 11 years old respectively. The deceased enjoyed perfect health, and her hearing and eyesight were good. He last eaw her alive at 7.30 on the morning of. July 15, when she informed him that she was going to make a call near the Newtown Museum. i Albert Edward Turner, Irani way motorman, said that on the morning of .July 15 he was driving a tram from I-yall Bay to the city, leaving the Bay at 10.20 a.m. He received a signal to stop at the Newtown Library, and a ladv passenger alighted. About halfway between the tram and the footpath the lady was hit by a. taxi-cab which was travelling in tho ■•line direction as the tram. Witness left the tram and picked her up and placed ■ her in the motor-car. She was uncon-. i scious and was removed to the Hospital. ' He could not estimate the speed at which ■ th» molor-car was travelling. i To Mr. O'Leary. The deceased was -run ' over by tho taxi-cab, her head being : struck by the radiator. Her body was. ■ about a yard behind the taxi-cab when , it pulled up. To Sergeant' Crmekshanlc: Witness did ■ not hear the taxi-driver sound his horn. 1 Dr. Berkley. house ureeon at the Wel--1 lington Hospital, said that lie examined deceased after admission and found that she was suffering from extensive injuries to the head and a fracture of the jaw. ; He could not say whether deceased was alive or dead when -;lie was admitted; in any case she was dead s.hortly after admittance. Death was due to the injuries and shock. Arthur Sherwood, tramway employee, who was on the tramcnr, said, lie heard the brakes of the motor-car applied, and lie saw the taxi hit the deceased. Tho distance between the kerb and the tram rail would be between 12 and 13 feet. After removing deceased to the Hospital witness returned to the scene of. the acci'dent and noticed a long skid mark on the rend. He measured it and found it to 1m 22 yards. The road 'was dry, but rain fell shortly after the accident. Witness did not hear any horn or bell from the taxi-cab. To Mr. O'Leary: When he saw the taxi-cab flash past it was making a noise as though the brakes were being applied. Tho deceased was knocked down by the radiator and.the taxi passed right over her) To Mr. O'Regan: The skid mark suggested that a wheel of the motor-car was locked. The taxi going unusually fast—he would say between 15 to "0 miles an hour. Herbert Bates, insurance agent, Kilbirnie, also gave evidence as to the accident. At this stage the inquest was adjourned till 9.30 this morning. 1
