COUNTRY SCHOOL CHILDREN
« CONVEYANCE'BY 11 OTOE. Br Meernnh.—pre** Association. New Plymouth, July 17. The refusal of the Education Depart* ment to make a grant for the conveyance- by motor of country chil-. dem to technical and second ary schools under the control of the Taranaki Board during the cur. tailed railway service, was strongly resented by the board at a- special meeting to-day. The position threatens to interfere with the whole course of education of the children affected, and will also retard the progress of-. : the others when the normal 'service is -.resumed through the necessity of bringing -,the ; country children up to the level of-(.ha town children, who are unaffected by tha railway >ervice. Tho board considers that the. matter of expense should not ■ be allowed to prejudice the children's education. - _ A resolution was passed expressing dia- ' appointment at the Department's atti- : tudc in declining to accede to tha reasonaide request for payment ot the cost of conveyance of country children to the ■ New Plymouth Technical College and 1 other secondary schools under the board's . jurisdiction, and strongly urging (ho ft* i partment to reconsider its decision.
