Midshipman Hall-Thompson, who i 3 in Wellington on leave, will remain in (Wellington to rejoin H.M.S. New Zealand on her arrival here. Captain HallThompson has had a long and varied experience in the Navy, ashore and afloat, and during his term of office- as Naval Adviser to the Government he has had his hands full. When war was declared v in August. 1911, the little Philomel (thirdclass cruiser of an ancient pattern) 6tole . ouietlv out of Wellington harbour in charge of Captain Hall-Thompson, and tho next New Zealanders heard of the vessel was from the Persian Gulf and Suez Canal, where. the quarter-of-a-cen-turv-old craft (now lying at the Clyde Quay Wharf) was "doing her bit" azainst the truculent desert tribes who were seeking to retard and check the movements of our troops in the eastern theatre of war. The Philomel returned after serving nearly three years, nn a station "Jack Tar" has hard words for. and resumed duties here. The work of drafting New Zealanders into the Navv was largely Captain Hall-Thomp-non's. and as Naval Officer the charge of the wharves (where the deep-sea steamers loaded foodstuffs for England) fell to his lot. Caotain ■ Hall-Thompson is being succeeded by' Commander T. A. Williams, who will arrive in Wellington by the. i transnort Briton-on Wednesday next.
