CLYDESDALE HORSES
ANNUAL MEETINGS OF SOCIETY. 'J'he annual meeting of the Clydesdale Horse Society of the Dominion of New Zealand (Incorporated) ivus held thoboard room of the JViesiaii Society, PalmtTstou Nortli. The retiring president, ilr. J. Knight, of Ecilding, presided, and there was a fair number of members present. Apologies for absence \veroreceived from Messrs. 3. A. Johnstone. (Dunedin), James Birtles (Waikonttiti),. A; Kelly (Mokau, Taranaki), J. ' Grant (Hawera), J. Craig (Wanganui), and H. Middleton (Waverley). t The chairman proposed a vote of sym- ■ pa thy with the relatives of all men who had sacrificed their lives in the cause of liberty and justice in the war. This was carried in silence, the members standing. In moving tho adoption of the balancesheet, the president said there was a lot said about tho horse being displaced by motors and tractors, find vliis was no doubt the case in certain circumstances, but. so far as could be present the end of the horse was not in sight by a long way, and. it was just a question whether more draught horses would not ... be 'required in the future than in tho past. There did not appear to he any /great surplus of working horses in the country, and a livelier demand seemed already to have set in. Mr. A. E. Harding seconded tho motion, and expressed satisfaction at tho iniproved position of the society, and also rit the renewed interest being taken by members. • ' ; . The treasurer presented his report, which'stated that talcing all things into consideration, the balance-sheet might be said to bo fairly satisfactory. They commenced the year with £11 k, 3d. in hand, and elided with ,£315 70s. 2d., an increase of ,£238 Us. lid., besides which tliey had made a progress payment of <£50 on ac? count, of printing Vol. 3, os against which nothing appeared, in the assets, though they had included ,£275 'in tho liabilities,/ tho balance of- the estimate costof'printing. Although they cut down tho'pfidigrees and appendices of the book there. was_ such a long list of - orrections • and additions, the accumulation of. three years,' that Vol. 3 would be just about bulk as Vols. 1 and 2.. There was-Another liability which perhaps should have appeared in the balance-sheet-ricontingeut'at liny that • was an estimate of the cost of the medals .won at the shows of affiliated A. and P. Associatiohs„and which, as had been intimated 6ome time ago, they bad been unable so far to procure. They cabled for the'dies a considerable time ago, and received"word that they were being.forwarded. but they had not as yet come to hamL The .number of medals won had graduallv-»gr6wn, and the present year would i have to bear au expense that , _ should Jiave been distributed over four. ".Perhans there will bo such a rush of. outstanding subscriptions that 1919-20 will not-be imposed upon," said the treasurer. "Something between fifty and a. hundred will do it. These outstanding suhperiutions, with the remaining conies nf Vols. 1 'and 2, and in a lesser degree 'the society's trophies, may be termed 'contingent' assets. They wonlif" not. >of course, yield much in a forced s,ile..,cor..jcpuld we expect a great deal on a mortgage upon them, but if wo keen going as we intend to, we will draw a certain amount of revenue from them. I would take this opportunity of urging members to lose no timo in sending in their entries, and foal returns for Vol 4, and in sd doing to use the proper forms, nndfill them in accurately. I3y <io . doing the work and the cost of producins.vVol. 4-will ! be minimised, and very, irreafl'v hastened." "•The?"motion for the adoption of the. balance-sheet was carried. The nresident .spoke of tlfe invaluable ■' wofk'dnne bv Mr. Hunter, without whose unswerving loyalty Volume 3 could not have been- published. , ' The uresident's sentiments were endorsed bv many members of the council, whn through personal intercourse were able tn testify to the painstaking labour done hv the treasurer, who'had steered the society's barque through stormy times 1 into comparative peace and safety. \ „The-following officers wj:re then elected for the ensuing year President, Mr. J. D. Wvllie, Gadesbunden; vice-presi-dents /North Island), Messrs. Quentin .Donald (Feathers ton), W. G. Park (Panehakua. Waikato): South Island: Messrs. ■Tames Tiirtles (Waikouaiti), G. C.
