PETONE COUNCIL MEETING
The l'etonc Borough Council met last evening. Those present were thu Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), Councillors D. S. Bedingfield, Urocklebank, Cox, Ch,urchouse, Hay, Anderson, and Cook. Tho inspector of tho Hospital and Charitablo Aid Board reported ono case of diphtheria in tho borough. Tho Minister of ltailways wrote, in reply to a request from tho council, that railway servants be granted a huliday oil the Tuesday of peace celebrations, stating that since tho forwarding of the council's letter tho peace arrangements had been altered, and that no celebrations would be lield on the Tuesday.—Councillor Churchouse moved that the Minister again bo written to, urging that railway servants bo granted a holiday on the Monday of tho celebrations. This was seconded, and agreed to. The Wellington Automobilo Club wrote, fo'rwarding a plan of tho proposed new road from Wellington- to Paekakariki.— Received.
A letter was received from the general' secretary of the Returned Soldiers' Association, enclosing a copy of the report of the Lands Committea, as adopted by tho recent conference in Christchurch, and proposing certain machinery for tho acquisition of land for the settlement of returned soldiers, and for the administration of the Discharged Settlement Act ; and asking the council's support in connection therewith. After some discus, sion it was, decided to give the council's support to the report. Tho secretary of the Board of Trade, Wellington, wrote, stating that Tuesday, July 15, at 11 a.m., had 'been fixed as a suitablo date for receiving the deputation from tho council regarding the gas dispute witfi .the Lower Hutt borough.—lt was decided that the deputation appointed would go into town this morning. Soveval offers for the leasing of tho council's buses wore received.—lt was decided to hold consideration of the offers over pending consideration of tho Motor Committee's report. • Tho report of tho engineer stated that the usual amount of repair work to tho .roads had been carried out. The average weelcly consumption of water during tho past month amounted to 2,203,000 gallons. During the month four new gas meters were put in, eleven meters were changed, and four gas fires and two cookers were fixed. The .one-inch main in Victoria Street had been taken up and re-laid with a one-and-a-half-inch main. The big engine in tho pumping station had been thoroughly overhauled, and new piston rings put in. Three building permits representing <i valuo of .CM had been issued during tho month.—The report was received. Tho inspector's report stated that a number of buildings which had been inspected were in need of repairs. During the month drains to seventeen new premises had been passed! With reference to the report of the Motor Service Committee it was decided, on tho recommendation of tho committee; that tho offers made, for the lease of tho buses bo not entertained.
Farmers' instructional classes (says the "New Zealand Herald") are to bo held at the lluakura State farm during tho week, July 21 to 20. Tho supervisor of tho manual and technical blanch, Mi 1 . J; P. Kalaugher, reported to the Education Board the other day that 80 farm,crs had 'signified their intention of attending tho classes. The week will bo spent in viewing demonstrations in wool classing, fencing, manuring, apiary work, and running oil engines, ond hearing lectures on tho treatment of tho various breeds of dairy stock, pigs, poultry, etc. On tho motion of tho Hon. G. ,T. -Garland, it was decided that as many members of tho board as possible should nttond the classes. Their presence, said M ( r. Garland, would show tho farmers the board's interest in their work, mid its appreciation of their attendance.
