MAILS BY MOTOR

Sir,—Now that the "cut" lias been made in the railway service throughout the Dominion ami postal vnns taken off trains, might I be allowed to make a suggestion to the postal authorities. I have noticed on the postal mail service bags ot mails strapped to the step? of motor-cars, and in other cases pil«l in quite a heap "in a small van attached to motor-cars. This, Sir, seems to me to be a dangerous way of carrying mails, and mail l>ags are very liable (o come off. To overcome this, my suggestion is lhat the postal authorities provide a van attached to the motor-car, about half the size or the present postal van. In this van different recesses could be made for the mails. Thus, a .'mall town like Levin,, a small r n cess. larger towns—Palmerston, Wanganui, New Plymouth, anil Auckland—could be provided with a larger recess for mails. The recesses could 'be placed on both sides of the van, with a right-of-way in between. Small tables could be provided on top of recesses for the clerk in charge of mails, to do any writing, etc. A few pigeon-holoa could alro be provided for ( loose papers in connection with the mails. Two runs could be provided. Olio to run between Wellington and Wanganui and back, and the other between Wanganui and New Plymouth. These vans could also be run to other places in tho Dominion, which could be arranged. I think, Sir, the time has arrived when a fast: motor service should come to stay. I understand, it is nearly three hours faster than the train service. If kept on it would be a big boon for the Dominion. Thanking you, Sir—l am, etc., J.H. N.B.—Recesses could 'oe provided for return journey for principal South I'lond towns. The paving in time in handling these mails alone would be considerable.— J.TL Wanganur Hast, July U, 1919.
